 Exhibition Outline

O-Edo. The name itself evokes bright, vibrant impressions of Edo, which in its time was one of the largest cities in the world. At the beginning of the 18th century, Edo was a city with an estimated population of around 1 million. This summer, the Edo-Tokyo Museum will present the Splendors of Edo special exhibition, offering visitors a closer look at the bright, vibrant aspects of the great city of Edo. This exhibition will examine annual events such as the rites and rituals of the samurai class and festivals of merchant families in Edo, depicting ceremonial situations and settings in the lives of Edo residents. In addition to exceptional pieces from the Edo-Tokyo Museum’s collection and other outstanding items from all over Japan, two sets of armor will be returning home to Japan from the UK and the USA. These items tell us of the passion for tomorrow among Edo residents. Their ceremonial situations and settings convey their dynamic passion for the future. Of course, such an outlook is not unique to the Edo period—it is still relevant to us today. We hope that in an era impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, this exhibition will offer a place to think about our own passion for tomorrow.
