Nagai Kafū and the Scenes of Edo-Tokyo

特集展示「永井荷風と江戸東京の風景」

The year 2019 is the 140th anniversary of the birth of the literary master Nagai Kafū and the sixtieth anniversary of his death. To commemorate those events, the museum is holding a special exhibition in the Permanent Collection Gallery.

This exhibition introduces famous places from illustrated books of kyōka (satirical verse) that Kafū, who loved Edo culture, researched for his Edo geijutsu ron (The arts of Edo) and landscape prints that he liked and that he mentioned in his collection of essays, Hiyorigeta (Fairweather clogs). Through paintings and picture postcards from the Edo through the Showa periods, it reveals the scenes that he noted in his diary (Danchotei nichijō), scenes that captured Kafū’s interest and aspects of the city depicted in his works.

Exhibition period: Wednesday, November 6, 2019, to Sunday, January 5, 2020

Days Closed: Mondays and Saturday, December 28, to Wednesday, January 1
